Embedded within the walls of the castle, on the rugged cliff overlooking the Osum River, lies a chapel that, in terms of size, proportions, architectural form, placement, and integration with the surroundings, represents one of the finest examples of medieval architecture in our country. Constructed entirely with ashlar masonry and featuring two vertical buttresses, the chapel comprises a nave and a lower narthex covered by a cylindrical vault on the western side.

The roofing of the nave has a pediment meeting at the corners of the nave (meaning the cross shape is absent on the roof). On the other hand, the dome’s roof follows the shape of the arches above the columns. Unlike other churches of this period in Berat, here, a pronounced vertical sense is evident due to the significant heights of both the nave and the drum with the dome, adorned by stepped arches surrounding the window niches.

Of particular interest are the stepped arches inside, indicative of Western architectural influences, perhaps already integrated into the local technical repertoire. The dating of this monument to the 14th century is not only based on architectural forms but also through comparisons with other churches in Berat and its surroundings, revealing a distinct development, an experience in the creation and use of architectural forms, and an advancement in construction craftsmanship.

Among the domed churches, there is also a small chapel, St. Mary in Dhërmi, Vlorë, characterized by a square nave with a dome (the current altar area dates back to the time before the Turkish occupation), constructed with stones and bricks. In terms of decoration, proportions, and construction techniques, it is dated to the 13th-14th century.

The hiking trial

The trail leading to the church is commonly referred to as the Hermit’s Path, owing to its proximity to a hermitage. This spiritual journey not only connects visitors with the religious significance of the area but also treats them to breathtaking panoramic views of the town.

Following the church visit, enthusiasts have the opportunity to extend their exploration by embarking on a hike up to the castle. While the path is well-established, it’s important to note that it can be slippery, underscoring the necessity for sturdy and reliable walking shoes.

The hike from the church to the castle is estimated to take approximately 20 minutes, offering a scenic and invigorating experience for those eager to delve deeper into the historical and natural wonders of the surroundings.
